Program Structure

As a student in the Individualized Degree Program you will design a degree plan that incorporates courses in multiple disciplines.

In addition, a sequence of required core courses introduces you to interdisciplinary thinking and modes of inquiry, and facilitates integration of the multiple disciplinary perspectives and knowledges presented in your other coursework. 

Degree Overview

45 units total

  • 9 units - Interdisciplinary core (3 courses)
  • 36 units - Individualized degree plan (IDP)
    • You have multiple options for how you build your individualized degree plan.

    • Optional: 1-6 units of internship can be included in IDP or taken as electives 

The core courses are offered online and depending on your interests and goals, and based on course availability, you may complete your IDP coursework and other degree requirements in-person, online, or hybrid.


Interdisciplinary Core Courses (9 Units)

SP 210 Minding the Gaps: Interdisciplinary Communication (3 units - pending approval GE area A1 and A3) Through discussions, debates, and presentations, learn interdisciplinary approaches to critically evaluate, integrate and communicate ideas and knowledge across academic disciplines. Includes intensive practice in oral communication, critical listening, and the use of digital media and technology. 

SP 310  Interdisciplinary Inquiry (3 units) Apply interdisciplinary modes of inquiry to problem solving, personal assessment and career development. Students examine complex socio-environmental problems and generate equitable and sustainable solutions. They draft an individualized degree proposal. 

SP 492W Senior Capstone Project (3 units - meets GWAR) Capstone experience for Interdisciplinary Studies. Students complete an interdisciplinary research or creative project and produce an e-Portfolio that reflects the outcomes and applications of their interdisciplinary learning.

Optional 

SP 482 Experiential Learning, Internship (1-6 units) Students explore and gain practical experience related to their educational and/or career goals. Students reflect critically on their experiential learning and report their reflections under faculty guidance. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 units total.

Up to 6 units of internship may be included in the individualized degree plan (IDP) or taken as additional elective units.

SP 350 Conceptualizing Prior Learning (2 units) Analyze nonclassroom learning; conceptualize it in academic terms. Develop a portfolio that could lead to up to 15 units of college credit (offered beginning Fall 2025).

SP 351 Portfolio on Prior Learning (1-15 units) Under supervision by faculty, submit for assessment a portfolio translating learning from prior experience into college-level academic terms (offered beginning Fall 2025).
